Eligibility

You are eligible for the Adoption Assistance Program if you are an employee of The Hartford who is scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week, and adopting a child who has not yet attained age 18.

Amount of Benefit

The company will reimburse you for 100% of your covered expenses up to $10,000 (per adoption). Please note that if you and your spouse or domestic partner both work for The Hartford, only one of you may receive the $10,000 reimbursement of covered expenses for adoption.

Reimbursable Expenses

The company will reimburse you for reasonable and customary expenses, including those for the services of a:

  • lawyer,
  • licensed adoption agency, and
  • state or local government agency (filing fees).

NOTE: Your lawyer must be a member of the bar in the state in which you initiate the adoption.

The company will not reimburse you for:

  • expenses towards the adoption of your spouse’s child,
  • expenses incurred while you were not an employee of The Hartford, or
  • any portion of a covered expense for which you receive reimbursement from another group plan or from a public or private organization.

Payment

Your reimbursement will be included in your next available paycheck following receipt and approval of the information listed under How To Apply for the Benefit.

Tax Implications

Adoption Assistance benefits may be taxable income to you. Please consult your personal tax advisor to understand any and all tax implications.

How To Apply for the Benefit

The Adoption Expense Benefit is managed through Maven Clinic. To apply:

Create an account at mavenclinic.com/join/thehartford or download the Maven Clinic app.

  • Select “I’m adopting.”

On your dashboard you will see “My Maven Wallet”

  • Click “Get started” to activate your Wallet
  • Click “Submit a receipt” and upload a digital copy of the required documentation (see below)
  • Reimbursement status will be displayed in the app.

Upload any required substantiation, including the following:

  • Itemized invoice, receipt, or detailed statement showing your name, date of service, description of services, your (or your eligible spouse’s/domestic partner’s) financial responsibility for the service, and the service provider’s name and contact information
  • Documentation of finalized adoption (including final court decree, birth certificate if available, and completed IRS form W-7)
  • Any other substantiation required for the expense
