WHY STAY UP TO DATE WITH YOUR PREVENTIVE CARE

First, it’s cost effective. Preventive care includes routine wellness exams, screenings, and immunizations intended to prevent or avoid illness or other health problems, and these services are covered at 100%, not subject to deductible, when you see an in-network provider.

More importantly, staying up to date on preventive care means you have a better chance of catching emerging health issues early, when:

  • they are usually more treatable and less expensive to treat, and
  • have the potential for a better outcome.

Please note that the same procedure may be considered preventive or diagnostic depending on the situation.

What is the difference between preventive v. diagnostic?

Preventive

  • Preventive screening reasons
  • Billed as preventive

Diagnostic

  • Diagnoses or treats symptoms or risk factors that are already present

For instance: A colonoscopy intended as preventive may become diagnostic if a polyp or area of concern is identified. Speak to your provider if you have questions about how your claim is being submitted.

Refer to your health plan option’s Summary Plan Description on NetBenefits for details on what is considered preventive. Log on the myuhc.com to develop a personalized preventive care checklist.

PERSONAL SUPPORT FOR YOUR CHRONIC HEALTH CONDITIONS

Maintaining a relationship with your Primary Care Physician (PCP) helps you avoid more serious condition-related events that can be expensive to treat and decrease your quality of life. Your PCP supports you in:

  • Managing any chronic conditions that you may have such as hypertension or diabetes
  • Staying compliant with your maintenance medications

In addition, UnitedHealthcare provides a program called Personal Health Support. If you are living with a chronic condition or dealing with complex health care needs, UnitedHealthcare may assign to you a primary nurse, referred to as a Personal Health Support Nurse, to guide you through your treatment answer questions, explain options, identify your needs, and/or refer you to specialized care programs, if appropriate. To find out more call a UnitedHealthcare Advocate at 1-844-562-6280.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY ON YOUR HEALTHCARE EXPENSES

Use in-network providers and compare costs. UHC negotiates discounts on services with providers in their network so that you pay less for services when meeting your deductible and paying your cost share after your deductible is met. Log on to myuhc.com to look for in-network providers in your area and to cost compare what in network providers and facilities are charging for visits and other medical services.

Use Urgent Care instead of ER. Non-life-threatening injuries can be treated more cost efficiently and less expensively in an urgent care facility.

Use virtual healthcare when appropriate. When you use one of UHC’s virtual visit providers (Amwell, Doctor on Demand or Teledoc) to diagnose and treat minor illnesses such as a sore throat, an ear infection or bronchitis, your cost is as follows:

Type of Virtual Visit PPO
MyChoice Select
CDHP
MyChoice Select
CDHP
MyChoice Core
Medical $0 copay $0 not subject to deductible $0 not subject to deductible
Behavioral Health $0 copay $0 not subject to deductible $0 not subject to deductible

What is the difference between a Virtual Visit and a telehealth visit?

A Virtual Visit is a medical or behavioral health visit conducted over the internet or on the telephone by one of UHC’s Virtual Visit vendors, currently Amwell, Doctor on Demand or Teledoc.
A telehealth visit is a medical or behavioral health visit conducted over the internet or on the telephone by your PCP or other healthcare provider. A telehealth visit with your PCP or other healthcare provider will be covered the same as any office visit and subject to the deductible, if applicable.
